Channels & messages

Chat keeps your team's conversations in one place. You talk in channels for groups or direct messages for one-on-one.

Create a channel

Channels group conversations by team, project, or topic.

  1. Open Chat.
  2. Click the plus next to Channels.
  3. Name the channel.
  4. Choose public or private.

A public channel is open to everyone in the workspace. Anyone can find it and join. A private channel is invite-only, and its messages stay hidden from people who are not members.

Every workspace has a #general channel. Use it for company-wide updates that everyone should see.

Direct messages

Send a direct message when you need one person or a small group. Click the plus next to Direct Messages and pick the people. Direct messages stay between the people in them.

Mentions and pins

Type @ followed by a name to mention someone. They get a notification, so use it when you need a specific person to read a message.

Pin the channels you check often. A pinned channel sits at the top of your list, so you reach it without scrolling.
