Compose & send

Click Compose in the Mail sidebar to write a message. The composer gives you To, Cc, and Bcc, a rich-text body, attachments up to 25 MB, and a From selector when you have more than one mailbox. Reply, Reply all, and Forward work from any open message. Drafts save themselves as you type, so a closed tab never loses your work. When you send, Mail confirms Queued for delivery. only once the platform accepts the message, and shows the exact reason when it does not.

Write and send a message

  1. Click Compose.
  2. If you have more than one mailbox, pick the sending address in the From selector.
  3. Type a name or address in To. Suggestions appear after two characters, drawn from your contacts and people you have mailed before.
  4. To copy more people, click Cc/Bcc and fill either field.
  5. Write your subject and message. The toolbar gives you Bold, Italic, underline, bulleted lists, and links.
  6. Click the paperclip to attach files (25 MB total per message).
  7. Click Send. A success reads Queued for delivery.

Reply, reply all, and forward

Open a message, then use the buttons above it.

  • Reply puts the sender in To and quotes the original below your cursor.
  • Reply all puts the sender in To and everyone else from the original To and Cc in Cc. Your own address and any of your aliases are left out, so you never copy yourself.
  • Forward starts a fresh message with a "Forwarded message" header and the original quoted. Add your own recipients. A forward carries the quoted text, not the original message's file attachments.

Cc, Bcc, and recipient privacy

Cc is visible to every recipient. Bcc is private: each Bcc recipient gets their own copy and cannot see the other Bcc addresses, or even the To and Cc lists. One message can carry up to 100 recipients across To, Cc, and Bcc combined. For a larger audience, use Email Marketing.

Attach files

Click the paperclip and pick one or more files. Each shows as a chip you can remove before sending. The limit is 25 MB total per message; a file that pushes you over is skipped with a warning. Attachments are not stored with a saved draft, so add them when you are ready to send.

Drafts save themselves

Start typing and Mail saves a draft every couple of seconds. You never click Save.

  1. Open the Drafts folder to see your unsent messages.
  2. Click a draft. The composer reopens with your text, recipients, reply threading, and chosen From address restored.
  3. Send a draft and it is deleted; a send that fails keeps the draft so you can retry.

Closing a message with real content in it asks "Discard draft?" so you can keep it as a draft or discard it. Two limits are worth knowing: a draft stores plain text, so rich formatting is not kept across a save and reopen, and attachments are not saved with a draft. Your drafts stay private even inside a shared team inbox.

Choose which address you send from

When you belong to more than one mailbox, a From selector appears at the top of the composer. Pick your personal address or a shared one such as support@. The choice is saved with the draft and checked again when you send. See Shared team inboxes.

What the delivery status means

Every sent message carries a status chip in the Sent folder and in the reader. It starts at Queued and becomes Sent once the platform accepts the message for delivery. When the platform confirms more about a message, such as a bounce or a spam complaint, the chip reflects that. Mail does not track whether a recipient opened or read your message.

Why didn't my email send?

A message that cannot be sent files no Sent copy and keeps your draft for retry. The composer shows the specific reason.

You see What it means What to do
This sending address is not verified yet. Your domain is not verified for sending. An administrator connects your domain. See Mail administration & deliverability.
Hourly sending limit reached; try again shortly. You sent 300 messages from this mailbox within an hour. Wait, then resend. For a campaign, use Email Marketing.
Every recipient is on the suppression list. Every recipient has previously bounced or complained. Correct or remove the recipients.

A recipient already on the suppression list is dropped from the send quietly, and the result tells you how many were dropped. Suppression is explained in Mail administration & deliverability.
